When I was 26, I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder 2. Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that can make it difficult for individuals to manage their emotions and behavior. It is characterized by mood swings altering from depressive and manic episodes. For women with bipolar disorder who are considering having a baby, there can be many questions and concerns about the potential impact on their mental health and their ability to care for a child.
The Journey I’ve Taken
I am now 28, and since being diagnosed, I have been on quite the journey of managing my mental health. I have tried several different medications. Currently, I am on Vraylar. It has been very helpful but it is a new medicine and the effects of it on pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. I also go to therapy and have made lifestyle changes to help manage my symptoms. I go to the gym 4-5 times a week, have a set schedule to help me, and am very open with my family and husband about my mental health, so I have all the support I can get.
Despite having bipolar, I want to have a baby.
My husband and I discussed it at length, and I decided that I do want to have a baby. While I am a stepmom, the journey into full-blown motherhood will not necessarily be an easy one. I will have to carefully plan my pregnancy with my doctors to ensure that my medicines are safe for the baby. I must also be closely monitored throughout my pregnancy to ensure my mental health stays stable. I might still experience mood swings and anxiety during the pregnancy, but I will have the support of my doctors, therapist, and family.
