Hello, dear readers!
It’s been quite a while since my last post in March 2023, and so much has happened since then. I wanted to take some time to catch you all up on the long and wonderful journey I’ve been on. Buckle up for an update filled with excitement, challenges, and growth!
Deciding to Grow Our Family
Last year, my husband and I decided to expand our family. With only a year left of my Ph.D. and excellent student insurance, it seemed like the perfect moment, mostly financially speaking (damn American healthcare). I was also very stable on my medication, which gave us the confidence to take this step.
Finding out We Were Pregnant
After trying for about five months, in August 2023, we finally got the news we were hoping for—I was pregnant! The excitement was overwhelming, but it was quickly followed by nerves when I realized my due date was close to graduation. Balancing pregnancy and finishing my degree was daunting, but I was determined to make it work.
Navigating Pregnancy and Academia
The university’s disability center was a lifesaver, ensuring I received the support needed to keep up with my coursework and research. However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Morning sickness was relentless, and there were moments when I had to power through nausea right before meeting participants for my research. The physical challenges, like hip and groin pain, made me waddle early on, and my growing belly required creative adjustments during EEG sessions with participants.
Defending my Dissertation at 8 Months Pregnant
Defending while 8 months pregnant was a unique challenge, especially with the pregnancy brain in full swing. I vividly remember going off on a tangent during my defense, only to realize I had misunderstood the question. It was a bit embarrassing, but I passed with minimal revisions.
Graduation Day with a Newborn
Two weeks after my C-section, I walked at graduation. It was a surreal experience, filled with pride and joy but also a bit of wistfulness as I wished I could have my newborn daughter with me. Despite moving a little slowly, I was thrilled to be there, celebrating the culmination of my hard work.
The Joys of Motherhood
Motherhood has been an incredible journey so far. The most rewarding experiences have been watching my daughter’s personality develop, seeing her smile, and hearing her attempts to laugh. It’s amazing to witness her growth and be part of her world.
Balancing Work and Motherhood
Balancing part-time work as a research assistant with motherhood has its challenges. I usually work when she sleeps or plays in her bouncer. However, I am considering finding someone to help once a week so I have dedicated work time and can be more present with her during the rest of the week.
Continuing my research
One of the exciting developments in my academic journey was the discovery of a new ERP component during my dissertation work. This discovery has fueled my passion for research, and I am currently working on a grant to continue this exploration.
Managing Bipolar Disorder Postpartum
Navigating postpartum life with bipolar disorder has been a delicate balance. I’ve been vigilant about monitoring my thoughts and energy patterns to prevent postpartum depression, anxiety, and psychosis. Regular check-ups with my psychiatrist and therapist have been crucial, and I manage partial hypomanic and depressive episodes the best that I can.
Since March 2023, life has been a whirlwind, filled with incredible highs and some challenging moments. I’m grateful for the support of my family, friends, and medical team, and I am excited to continue sharing my journey with you all.
